We’ve previously covered how a GoPro camera can make a nice addition to a smart home. But cameras in general have been well known devices for their home automation capacity. Here, we touch on some commonly-used devices that aren’t traditionally thought of as smart home gadgets. We will also tell you about our experience with each, and what ones play nicest in the smart home realm. The links below will redirect you to Amazon, where you can check them out for yourself!
1. Logitech G604 Wireless Mouse
It may seem a bit weird, but combined with programs like IFTTT and Alexa routines, this mouse is one of my most-used home automation devices.
The 15 programmable buttons are amazing. I keep it by my couch to control my TV. But I can also press a button to silence the doorbell so the dogs don’t bark. Another button shows the baby monitor on the TV. I find this mouse is the best for a balance of price and functionality.
2. MOBI 3 Finger Phone Ring Holder
Your phone is the primary controller of your smart homes. It makes sense that you’d want the best handling experience for it. A good grip also helps to protect your phone from drops.
This is my go-to. The handle is incredibly secure on my phone (no more wobbling with a pop-socket). But one of the best things is that it’s also magnetic, so it works perfect for car mounts.
3. Tile
I honestly don’t know where I’d be without Tile in my wallet and on my keys. And more recently I’ve added their new sticker on my phone.
These things work great with Alexa. They keep coming out with new styles that let you attach them to more things. Once you get them, you won’t remember how you lived without them.
4. Magnet 3 LED Magnetic Pickup tool
This one’s a no-brainer. A magnetic pick-up tool will pay dividends every time you drop a screw on the floor. And the flashlight on the end makes the job a lot easier
I like this one in particular because: 1. it’s crazy cheap for the product and quality, and 2. the telescoping extension makes getting keys out from under the car seat too easy.
5. SAMSUNG T7 Portable SSD 1TB
How is a hard drive a smart home device? Home automation enthusiasts who strive for complete local control know the importance of hard drives. Where do you think they store all their security camera footage? But another smart home use for hard drives is the creation of a cloud. Many routers nowadays have this function, and it makes it increadibly east to share content with others in your home. Try to opt for a solid state drive (SSD) to maximize speeds, if your budget will allow it.
Anything Can Be a Home Automation Device
These are just a few that aren’t often thought of for smart homes. Be creative, and enjoy finding unique ways to use devices for whatever need may arise. If you come across a great home automation hack, be sure to let me know!
